Volunteer Hours

If you use any of the following club services, then 25 hours of volunteer time or $100 is due the club, prior to the end of the fiscal year (June 30). Hardship conditions will be considered by the board on an individual basis.

  1. Entry in any USFSA competition where the application has to be approved by a club officer (home or away).
  2. Skating tests where the application has to be approved by a club officer (home or away).
  3. Participation in a club show.
  4. Use of club ice.
  5. Other club events requiring volunteers, or club expense to operate.

Why were mandatory volunteer hours implemented in 1995?

Well, for the board, and those of you who have been reading your newsletters over the last two years it is not suddenly at all. Those of you who have recently joined may have been surprised, and those of you who don't read club newsletters have probably been shocked. This is a reality that the board has had to face as use of club resources has continued at it's normal pace & fewer members were willing to participate in operation of the events.

For example, until the last club show we never had a problem finding people to sew the costumes. Last time we did! We realized that if this occurs this year it is unfair to place the burden on a few wonderful volunteers to sew costumes, etc. for non-volunteers. It would be more fair to allow the non-volunteers to pay us to hire someone to work for them. This is the only purpose for the $100, should we need to collect it. Frankly, we don't want it, we just want to be more fair than we have been.

Our biggest fund-raiser is the fireworks booth in the Safeway parking lot at Guernville Rd. & Marlowe. Last year about 10 people did 80% of the work (for a club of 400+ members), This year we had so few helpers, initially, that it looked like we might have to close the stand and raise the general dues to compensate for the losses. At the last (and I mean last) minute about three heroes arrived to keep it open. Thank those unnamed individuals for the dues staying as low as it is.

About the show. This is a high budget production, designed to give our youth an experience of what is might be like to be part of a skating troop.

The show loses money almost consistently!

The kids especially want the show! They look forward to it! Parents & Adult skaters also want the show. This is a show year, we need to produce a show for you if at all possible, so the board reluctantly chose this option.

Let's all kick in, this year, let's develop better ways to work together & notify each other when help is needed. Let's solve this problem as a club and get rid of mandatory work time. I put in hundreds of hours of time & I still don't like the concept of "having" to put in 25 hours.

From the board's perception (there are 13 voting members, all volunteers),there is a limited amount of time available to hunt down help. After doing what they had time available to do over the last three years, they reluctantly resorted to this attention getter.

What they want you to know is that it is not just their (the Board of Directors') club, it is my club, and your club, and also their club. It really is! Come and participate. Come to your board's meetings & see what goes on. You'll find a handful of friendly, hard working, volunteers there. And incidentally, they decided their board meeting time should not qualify as volunteer hours under this program.
